Getting Started with Cricket: A Beginner's Guide

Understanding the Basics

Cricket is played between two teams of eleven players. One team bats while the other bowls and fields. The batting team scores runs by hitting the ball and running between two sets of wooden sticks called wickets. The bowling team tries to dismiss batters in various ways, most commonly by knocking over the wickets or catching the ball.

Matches come in different formats. Test cricket is the longest form, lasting up to five days. One-Day Internationals (ODIs) take around eight hours, whilst Twenty20 matches are fast-paced games lasting just three hours. At club level, you'll typically play friendly or league matches in formats like 40-over or 20-over cricket.

What You'll Need

To start playing, you'll need basic equipment: a cricket bat, protective gear including pads, gloves, and a helmet, and cricket shoes. Most clubs, including ours, have equipment available for new members to borrow whilst you're getting started.

Joining Pinner Cricket Club

We offer coaching for all age groups and abilities. Our experienced coaches will teach you proper technique, fitness, and the rules of the game. We run training sessions throughout the year, with summer being our main playing season from April to September.
